The circles in the average price for payware column shows approximate percentage of average price for payware in all categories of software. The circles in the average price for shareware column shows average percentage of the average price for payware for that category of software only.

In short: Show if it is cheap or expensive. The more green the cheaper. The more blue, yellow and red, the more expensive. The percentage written in the circles is very simplified and not an exact value.

The circles in the Top-100 lists shows approximate percentage of average payware-price for that category of software only. Payware can be defined as software that is not distributed as shareware. Shareware can be defined as software that can be tried before payment. A kind of demo, crippled or fully functional that can be downloaded from Internet or BBS etc.

Please NOTE that the prices are not exact, they can vary a lot from country to country and from place to place within each country. SoftBase is a database with at the moment around 29300 products mostly software and 17200 suppliers.

Every product can belong to one or more of over 90 categories like Mail, Windows, Communication etc. Normally a product belongs to between 3 and 5 categories.

The rating is based on:
  • Sales
  • Top downloads in wellknown shareware/freeware sites like CNET, ZDNET, PCWorld etc.
  • Editors choices in different well known computer magazines
  • Mentioning of the product in different well known computer magazines
  • Ratings in above all different well known computer magazines.
  • If the product has product information page and if the supplier has a general home page.
  • Age of information. Hardware ages much faster in ratings than any other product. If the product is long time forgotten in magazines and on download sites the rating goes down.
  • Type of OS. If a software is running under DOS only it can be considered almost obsolete except for boot purposes or security like rootkit revealing etc.
  • Reputation of the source of information. E.g. PC Magazine and PC World are rated higher than all other sources of information. My own very rare SoftBase ratings are rated very low in comparizon to all other ratings
  • Low version numbers up until and including version 1.0
  • If a product no longer has support or if it is no longer sold or distributed
  • Some other information available mostly on the Internet

    • The rating is not based on the single category alone that a TOP 100-list belongs to. The TOP 100-lists are not to be taken as an absolute advice but just as a general information giving the reader an idea about what to choose. SoftBase has less of games especially those involving magic and/or jinns and ghosts. There is also very little of economical applications using mainly interest. Less of music, sex, gambling and national man-made laws except taxes. Less of to a certain extent man-made religions.
